Attention Carphone Warehouse Customers

Thursday 7th April, 2005
This is not a rant, this is pretty serious and doesn't just affect me.

Late last year, I purchased a new Nokia 9500 Communicator from Carphone Warehouse along with a new contract on the Vodafone network. My contract was for 200mins and a £25 "extras pack" was chosen that provided the equivalent of 500txt messages.

Due to an administrative error on their end I initially wasn't on the correct tariff and was billed incorrectly for December, January & February. By March they had eventually managed to put me on the correct tariff but, it seems, my bill is still wrong.

The fault lies with the extras pack. This is to be used against SMS, MMS and GPRS. On examination of the itemised bill though I can cleary see that I am still being charged for the GPRS traffic. This has resulted in me being overcharged over £30 since connection.

It's taken an unbelievable amount of effort to get this far. Nobody recognised my problem initially and then, when they did, it took a rediculous amount of time to put me on the correct tariff. I've now been sent a demand to settle my latest invoice. This is the 3rd set of billing I have received and still it is completely wrong. Whilst the bill for March clearly shows my extra pack, and specifies that it counts against GPRS, I'm still clearly being charged for GPRS traffic that I shouldn't be.

After paying for an incorrect December bill and then being direct debited for a January bill that was around double what it should have been (£87 overcharge) I took a step of cancelling my DD in February and have since not paid them, demanding accurate billing back to day one. We're now in April and I'm yet to receive this, but they're not prepared to discuss further until I pay my inaccurate bill. In the meantime, they have barred my phone. Jenny Roberts who works with Charles Dunstone in the Chief Executives Office is no longer replying to my emails and hiding behind voicemail in order to avoid my queries. It is this Jenny Roberts that has been the one recalculating my bill in error so many times without actually helping me out at all. She's not prepared to address a problem that could affect all users in their customer base.

If you're a Carphone Warehouse contract customer that also has an extra pack then check your bill and if you find any errors please contract me. As this potentially affects thousands of customers (possible O2 customers too) there is likely to be some media involvement in this in order to get it resolved.

You are not alone; I have been over billed for GPRS data while in Paris. When I recognised the problem I asked CPW to suspend the service until the problem could be resolved and I was told this would be done but alas it wasn't and I was charged. The situation steadily worsened with CPW refusing to consider my problems and I too cancelled my DD in an attempt to get some satisfaction. After much discussion and promises from CPW the situation worsened further when I received a creditors notice. I also contacted Charles Dunstone and his assistant refused to accept that CPW were at fault. Finally after suggesting that I would take my complaint to OFCOM they agreed to credit me half of the amount in dispute. I have yet to decide on whether to pursue the case.

I use O2 through carphone warehouse, and my last couple of bills seem to be unusally high. I was subscribed to their "Web Surfer" GPRS service that gives 4MB a month. The sum of my phone call costs for March is less than £1, but the total call costs is £110.64. I imageine the rest must be GPRS charges, but these are not listed on the itemised billing, that they charge 99p a month for. I expect I went over 4MB in March, but not to that extent. When I rang their billing support, they seemed to be telling me I had used 11MB, which should not have cost anything like as much.

I've just upgraded my GPRS tariff to their 36MB version, a process that required several phone calls and being transferred from one department to another. I don't think I will exceed that amount in any month, so hopefully my bills will drop to more reasonable levels.

I was interested to hear about the trouble you've had with CW, but like Paul, I am not surprised. I've worked for a large telco and found that instead of being absolutely rock-solid, the billing systems are pretty fragile, and not really as robust as they would like to think. I also had a major problem with Three, similar to the one where they simply don't recognise a problem for one reason or another, possibly because it is new or whatever. But the bottom line is that they should be a lot more responsive to and trusting of customers who make an effort to go through the right channels to get action. Even Ofcom let me down, and as it turns out, one of the major causes of my problems with three (which they didn't acknowledge until months after Ofcom's final decision - in their favour), was that a large batch of phones of the type I had were faulty from the manufacturer. By brushing off the complaints about this (of which the network operator must have theoretically owed thousands of pounds) until months down the line, they save themselves a lot more hassle having to set up compensation schemes etc.

So good luck with the person that takes over in the CEO's office at CW - you'll need it!

I am so glad that I have found other people who are frustrated by the CPW service.

I too have had a number of problems with them and thier website.

    1) I recieved a text message advising me that my 'credit limit had been increased from £100 to £180 - I was to call a 0845 number if I did not want this. (0845 costs me to make the call).

I was advised that my limit had now been dropped to £100 - I was happy.

About a week later, I recieved another text message "Your credit limit has been increased to £180" - So I emailed them to complain. The limit was again dropped to £100.

Recently I was abroad, and used my phone (knowing it was more expensive). On my return I noticed that my credit limit was now increased to £190 (against my will), and a final bill of £247! - now i know your not supposed to use your credit limit as a 'financial control' - however there is a big difference between £100 and £247.

    2) I pay 0.84p for a "FULLY ITEMISED BILL" (note 'FULLY') - However this does not appear to include ANY GPRS data?!? - What is the point in an itemised bill when the calls you make dont match your bill...I do not like "hidden charges" as I have no way of confirming what I am being charged for is real. It might only be 0.84p - however its the principle of it that frustrates me.

    3) for some reason, my Invice and Direct Debit and is issued at completly random times and dates in the month (sometimes up to 10 days difference) - Why do they not do this on set dates (or at least close to the same day) like most phone companies.

I will most definatly be leaving CPW when my contrat runs out. But then I highly doubt Charles Dunstone (owner of CPW) will be concerned when he is worth £670 million!!

I would be interested to know if anyone else has the same problems with CPW.

I ordered n N90 on o2 from One stopphoneshop.com and was shocked to find out that i was connectted to cpw and not o2 and as a result o2 wont/cant sort my problems.

I think cpw should make it clear from the outset that you are not actually signing a deal with o2. I am now trying to get my contract cancelled due to not agreeing to purchase a cpw contract, only problem is i ported my number in and look set to lose this now for 2 weeks. This is a buisness number.

i guess i'm not liable for call costs as i never actually signed anything to agree to pay cpw for calls.

What a relief to find other people that have been shafted by Carphone Warehouse - 6 months ago we signed up on a business tariff on Orange for 3 phones with cashback incentive (signing CPW paperwork)- since that time Orange have been charging us for 5 and no cashback (even though it was stipulated on the contract!!!) If I speak to CPW they say its Orange's problem if I speak to Orange they say its CPW - if I say I want to cancel the contract - they say speak to Orange as CPW only ever sold us the phones - Orange say they have no paper work, but if I try they will hold me to the contract. I have never experienced anything so random and the original Business Solutions team has now been disbanded. We're off to Ofcom but may I just say never deal witn these jokers. the final nail in the coffin is when you ask to speak to Customer Complaints they put you straight back to the original customer service team.

In September 2005 I changed bank accounts. Payments were taken from the new account by the Carphone Warehouse, but on 17th January 2006 they attempted to take payment from the old account. My mobile was disconnected due to non-payment, as it was returned. This resulted in a loss of £550, through a clients inability to contact me.

I stopped using the mobile account in February 2006 and paid the outstanding amount of £59.44. I wrote to the Carphone Warehouse on 27th April explaining the situation, and that I would like to disconnect from the service with no further fees. Correspondence ensued with the Carphone Warehouse denying responsibility, until I had to send copies of my bank statements to the High Level Complaints Department, which I felt very uncomfortable with, but saw no alternative.

On the 4th August I received a letter apologizing for the mistake, and stating that as a gesture of goodwill they would offer a credit of £50 towards future bills, or if we wished they would disconnect me without any penalty. I chose disconnection and was informed this would take place on 7th of September with nothing left to pay.

I then received a bill dated 14th September 2006 for £81.92. I called the Carphone Warehouse and was told to ignore the bills as there was nothing more to pay. On 7th February 2007 I received a creditor’s note from threatening to take the matter to County Court if I did not pay £80.32 within seven days.

I have spoken with the Carphone Warehouse again who are insisting that I owe £80.32. I was told that this was the line rental I owe up to 7th September 2006. I was informed that the “no penalty” they referred to, related to 30 days notice of cancellation which they wavered. But I had already provided this in May 2006. When I raised this issue, I was told that the cancellation had to be given in the 11th month of the contract, otherwise it was not valid. Which I believe is a lie, as I received confirmation of my intention to cancel on 17th May 2006, but were told this wouldn’t take place till 7th September. I also raised the issue of the calls where I was informed I would have nothing to pay, but was told that the staff had either made mistakes or that I “frightened” them into telling me there would be no more fees.

The Carphone Warehouse has manipulated me into believing they were canceling the contract without a penalty, when in reality they did not cancel my contract until the day it was due to end. They have charged me for a service I have not been using, even though I was reassured a number of times over the phone this would not happen.

    Disgusting

    Hi guys,

I have a phone contract with carphone warehouse, just gone into my second year with a free upgrade. what a nightmare trying to upgrade my phone, they couldnt even manage to stick to their word about that!! i had them hang up on me numerous times, and when i phoned back they said it was a problem with the line. Then, my phone didnt arrive. and the tariff I wanted was no longer available. I said i wanted to disconnect, so they gave me an address to write to. after that, they phoned me every day.

They only want to know you when they think they can keep you on the network. once they reel the fish in, they throw you in the keep net. They are useless wankers.

I have just started work for O2 and believe me, the only way the companies are linked is that O2 lend them the network basics such as the tariffs and network coverage. CPW have their own staff, their own call centres and are FUCK ALL to do with O2 as a company. They give O2 a bad name.

Carphonewarehouse is the worst of the worst for costomer service. I think when taking out a new contract its better to deal direct with the network. With the carphone warehouse its all about sell sell, when something goes wrong you are on your own.

Has anyone had the problem of carphone warehouse losing their phone in the repair centre. Its been 5 weeks now, loads of phone calls and visits to the store to be fobbed off everytime. Aparently it left the repair centre but didn't arrive at the packing dept!! I can't claim on the insurance without a police ref no, and as its not a crime I can't get a ref number and even if I could I don't see why I should pay the £29.95 excess as they lost my phone. Appreciate any comments as to how to resolve this issue. Thanks

I have been with carphone warehouse for about 5 years without any problems or complaints when i renewed my contract this year i also entered a mobile data contract for 20MGB i was told by the sales person that this was there highest package and couldnt possibly be used in 1 month within 2 weeks my services were restricted when i phoned i was told i had exceeded my call limit of £230 and that the bill was now at £300 and that i would have to make a payment to get my services resumed which i paid £200 and didnt use the internet again within 2 days my services were suspended again when i phoned i was told the bill had risen again to £700 and would continue to raise as there was a 10 day delay in them recieving the data from my phone which is not true it only takes 3 days, when i asked why they was not controlling the call limit i was told that it wasn,t down to them to control it. i have spent 3 weeks calling customer services daily for hours at a time and got no where

i recenetly wrote and posted letters to every department to recieve a letter back saying basically its not there problem, i believe i was mis sold the package to begin with and then was let down by carphone warehouse when they didn,t keep to my call limit, i have no way of proving whether i used what they say or not, i have been left owing a £800 bill which they have already had £200 as well , i believe they are at fault for allowing me to get a £1000 phone bill if they place a call limit which is to stop this happening then why do they not have a monitoring system in place to make sure it is kept to.

They think if they pass you between departments when you phone that youll just forget it, if you write letters there reply is that its not there problem.

    Attention o2 Customers

I have been with o2 for 5 years. I am getting so many lies from them. They have denied the tariff i was on for 4 years even existed. Does anyone notice that its always a few months into the contract that you start receiving higher bills as a result of o2 changing the goal posts? Truly a nightmare of a company to deal with. Customer service is not at all good.

I was using O2 on Carphone Warehouse since year. My contract was about to end last month. I called up to end my contract and stop service with CPW. They convienced me for new contract with same redemption (cheque back), which I had for last year. I was said that everthing will come to you in writing (new contract & how cheque back system works). Since month now, I haven't received anything. When I went to check my details with CPW local store, they check my account and said you are already on new contract without any redemption offer. I am transfers to 35£ per month contract for 12 month without any offer.

When i called up to customer service they keep on saying you can't break the contract now, as you are on new contract since last month (out of 14 day trial period).

I can't understand, how can they move to new contract, without 1st contract ends (on 15th Apr)?

Well, lesson learned... don't agree for a new contract over a phone... they can do anything to keep you on their account...

    Very bad Tectics...
