I think even hanging would be too kind for these two.

They will hide behind the shield of 'Sickness' and we will spend vast amounts on rehabilitation.

I hope Group 4 drop them off on a General Population wing first by mistake!

Strange that Radio 1 are reporting Tanya French got 10 years though.

That makes me SOOOO mad!! It's as bad as what we're dealing with on this side of the ocean:

    { Link }

    "Burlington, Vermont -- January 4, 2005 [sic]

There was outrage Wednesday when a Vermont judge handed out a 60-day jail sentence to a man who raped a little girl many, many times over a four-year span starting when she was seven.

The judge said he no longer believes in punishment and is more concerned about rehabilitation."

You can't rehabilitate these sickos! Maybe in very rare cases, but honestly - let's NOT just give them 60 day sentences. This man and the judge should probably be taken out an beaten.

But like Shep alluded to with the General Population wing, when this dude is released in 60 days he probably won't be on the streets too long...

No punishment is too harsh for these sub-human types. Public hanging or a public draw and quartering would work. But it has to be public.

I say we go back to punishment methods from the naval piracy age (roughly 1400-1800). Pirates were hung from the gallows in a public place. The most notorious were also embalmed in tar and encased in a cage. The body was then left to hang and swing in the wind until nothing was left.

Just put them in the general population of the prison system and let the other prisoners exact punishment on these two. That way they are sure to suffer and you will not have to worry about appeals.

Firstly, let me say I am a father of two young girls, and if this had happeneed to them I'd be first in the line to carry out the execution.

Having said that, I don't pretend to understand what drives anyone to commit such a crime, apart from the belief that they are, in the most real and extreme sense, ill. I wonder, though, if the general reaction, very much from the heart and very understandable, is really the best answer ? It may be, but then again might it be better to learn as much as possible from their condition whilst making sure they never again have the opportunity to do such a thing again ? Lock 'em up, certainly, and for a very long time. But if, at the same time, we can use them to develop means to identify other potential child rapists *before* they strike then that surely has to be worthwhile. As a father I owe that to my kids.

Colman, you bring up a good point. I was watching an interview with someone regarding our Vermont case that I brought up earlier. The Vermont governor has made a statement condemning the judge's action. Apparently, though, the judge will have another hearing of this case on Friday. One of the reasons that he wanted to only sentence this apparently mentally ill man to 60 days was because he wanted to make sure that he was treated ASAP. He felt that the prison system would not provide this.

Well, the governor has stated that if the man is convicted for a longer prison term that the governor will ensure that treatment is started immediately in the confines of the prison system.

There could be some hope for this, but the judge still should have enforced a long conviction AND treatment.

PS. Seriously, the real problem with the death penalty is being 100% certain that you haven't made a mistake. After the bombings in Birmingham in 1974 the police were under great pressure to get confessions and they did - but the convictions were overturned after 15 years whereas if the UK had the death penalty in 1974 those men would have got it. You see the problem?

That's apart from the fact that to take an other human life is a terrible thing, though I have to say that in the case of those who hurt children, I wouldn't shed any tears over them. But would I want to pull the trigger myself? That's a tougher one.

a boy goes out to play cricket in the park with he's grandad . a gang of youths attack them just for laughs!! and kill the boys grandad brutally! by smashing he's head with rocks right ! in front of the little boy......they got two years suspension???? they took a mans life and mentaly scarred a little child for ever ))) and the best the courts could do was 2 years suspension. its a sic sic joke played 'by the criminal justice system' on that poor little boy and he's family. at the moment we have about one murder a week 'on average' so yea....time to bring back hanging. and why not! public hanging. why have we got a huge army of people dedicated to to preserving the life style and dignity of these murdering bastards. WHY??? its no wonder we have lost control, its no wonder people are afraid to let their children out to play. i wouldnt mind if life meant life!! but most of the time these bastards are back on the streets within 5 to 7 years from a life sentence.
