Desperate Housewives

Thursday 6th January, 2005

OK, so I fell victim to the hype and cancelled my regular Wednesday night trip to the pub to watch the new show Desperate Housewives on Channel 4. Not really my kind of show, but The Sun newspaper here in the UK had an article that promised me images in the show of Teri Hatcher naked and who was I to refuse. (At this point you'll realise how many Google hits "Teri Hatcher naked" is going to give me today).

Well, what can I say? Hatcher is about the only person in the whole show who can act and it should be called Desperate Scriptwriters. Maybe it's just an American thing that doesn't appeal to my English brain but I though it was trash, I'd rather be watching re-runs of Sunset Beach.

As a bonus, Channel 4 ran next week's episode immediately afterward on their sister channel E4. This gave me the ability to confirm the show was complete rubbish without staying in another week. I saw 10mins of the second episode before waking up on the sofa shortly after it finished. Says it all really.

Anybody else watch it? Opinions welcomed...

    Desperate Housewives

Any show which has it's prime qualification listed as "actor / actress naked" is pretty much guranateed to be trash. If they don't have anything else worth mentioning, like "rivetting drama, spine-tingling terror, a plot twist you won't believe..." that they can honestly advert, then it's safely in the trash bin. I havn't watched it, but this simple metric saved me the hour and 10 minutes (minus short nap) it cost you. ;-)

Over here in the states, there are two camps, the 'show us lesbian transvestite hookers wrestling in mud 24/7' camp and the 'I'm taking some of my life and placing it in your hands, dearest tele', don't dare waste this precious resource with trivial crap.' camp.

I'm in the later - if it doesn't promise to show me remote corners of the world, discuss theories worth pondering or at least have one distinguished Brit doing a voice over, I'm off for more productive things.

Of course you're right, although the press seemed to like it. Comments like "american TV at it's best". Hmmmm....doesn't say much.

I have to say that these days, I'd rather give up my cable TV than my broadband box.
