Does Lotus Really Exist?

Thursday 3rd February, 2005
The amount of talk of Lotus in the computing world still amazes me. People speak of Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino, LotusSphere etc. as thought it's still a company.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Lotus was dead but just lives on as a brand, a badge or maybe a logo. Lotus became IBM a long long time ago. In fact I thought it was dead back in 2001 almost 4 years ago now.

A search at Companies House in the UK tells us:

Name & Registered Office:
LOTUS DEVELOPMENT UNITED KINGDOM LIMITED
P O BOX 41
NORTH HARBOUR
PORTSMOUTH
HAMPSHIRE PO6 3AU

So it's no longer in Staines, no longer at Lotus Park...but in fact just a PO Box in North Harbour, Portsmouth...the home of IBM.

I read articles like Bruce Elgort's today and I wonder why we speculate about what are "Lotus" are up to? what are "Lotus" planning? etc.. Lotus are not planning anything, they're just an IBM puppet wearing a Lotus T-shirt.

If you're questioning what I am saying then I ask you one question...

Why was IBM Workplace the highlight of LotusSphere? It's
not a Lotus product....

Perhaps there is something inside most of us that want Lotus to still exist as a company and not just a brand, just like we would still like LDD to be just Notes.net, at least that's the way I still get to it. I sure hope they plan on keeping it registered. At least I'm good until 11/28/05. I have dibs on the domain if they let it go! JK

    Lotus still exists as a culture, it is the way people are behaving, believing (!!) and performing. The question is, does IRIS exist? { Link }

True Lotus is not a company, but as you pointed out, it is a brand at IBM, just like WebSphere, Tivoli, DB2, Rational, ThinkPad, eServer, iSeries, zSeries, etc. IBM has many divisions, and the marketing of these is complex. That is why when asked at Lotusphere this year about Workplace being branded "IBM" the resposes always revolved around the strength of the IBM name. This is a very good thing.

    Agree with Christian.

Lotus exist as long as people who have experienced the company continue to work in a certain way.

BTW, the argument about Workplace being a Lotus product or not is pointless. Websphere Portal is not part of Websphere brand, went to Lotus and now is under the umbrella of Workplace, just like Domino.

Names keep changing, but you will always know if Lotus exist.

Put it this way... Aston Martin may be a brand of Ford Motor Company but a DB9 is still an Aston Martin.
